1: Have a Great Video Idea
Before you can even think about creating a video, you need a great idea. If you have some kind of product or service to sell, it’s good practice to have at least a loose plan for how you’re going to promote it in your video.

While it’s hard to quantify exactly what goes viral, there are certain characteristics that all videos that have reached a viral level share. You can consider whether or not your video has these qualities before sharing it on social media in order to help maximize its chances of going viral. Choose one that best represents your video—if it’s for kids, select Education & Family. And make sure you choose a category with plenty of other videos already in it (otherwise there will be little traffic).
3: Stick to One Topic
Keep your video focused on one topic. The best videos are always shorter. Even a twenty-minute video can be effective if it’s consistently engaging, but if you try and cover too much, viewers will get bored and move on. Be open about what you can give people in a short amount of time; for example, I can teach you how to play guitar in 5 minutes versus I can teach you how to play guitar in 5 hours!
4: Tell a Story
When you tell a story, your audience will be more engaged and will likely spend more time with your content. In fact, a survey by Public Relations Society of America found that one-third of respondents would share stories on social media before they would share facts. Make sure you provide enough context so people can enjoy whatever it is you’re telling them about. Perhaps include historical background or some context for those unfamiliar with what you’re discussing.
5: Make it about People, Not Things
While how-to content has its place, for a video to go truly viral, it needs to focus on what people want and not just show off what you want. People don’t connect with products—they connect with people. Be relatable. Be emotional. Most importantly, be helpful!
